Snow fun and Dutch-oven cooking December 28, 2012

A lovely day out in the snow followed by an evening where the boys cooked using the Dutch oven.  They cooked ‘Nundawaga Stake Cobler’ from The Scout’s Large Groups Cookbook.  It was absolutely divine.

A really wonderful day for getting out onto the snow.  We went up to walk around Gold Creek trail.

We got away from the Sammamish rain and headed up to Hyak for a bit of snow shoeing.  The sun even made an appearance on the way back.  We snapped some animal tracks and will check out later what they were…

Ben v’s Wild November 25, 2010

Ben has been watching a lot of Man v’s Wild with Bear Grylls.  Yesterday he built a snow hut and spent several hours inside it with –5 deg C temperatures (and then came in for hot cider).  Just hope he’s not going to start eating like Bear.

Mirror Lake July 20, 2008

Mirror Lake is an hour or so hike from the the nearest road.  The water is crystal clear and, even in July, was surrounded by snow.  Given its relatively remote location few people venture there to fish.

The scenery is breathtaking.

Typical Lake Alice rainbow trout caught, in this case, on an orange streamer. The right hand photo shows the view from the boat launch. A quiet spot that happened to be the first place I caught a fish in Washington.  Typically I've used simple streamers pulled slowly through the…

Didn’t quite make it all the way to Lake Serene – the snow was a little too treacherous for the last half mile.

We’d made it over but the furniture shipment was still coming over.  So we spent most of the time sitting on the floor.  Some time in January a container arrived and the feeling that we were camping in a big house started to go away.  Oh yeah, the –20 deg Celsius temperatures meant the lake froze and so did our water pipes.

7+ miles to Olallie Lake and back on compacted snow.  No need for snow shoes although we did end up having to guess the trail and forge our own path for the last 0.75 mile down into the lake.  The last photo shows the view over the snow-covered frozen lake. …

Not long after we arrived we experienced our first taste of how cold it can get in Connecticut.  Here are Howard, Pam, Jack and Ben clearly the snow from the driveway.
