Hiking Merit Badge – 10mile hike no. 1 November 10, 2012

No Gravatar

A load of scouts are working towards their 10mile hiking merit badge.  We are setting up a series of outings to let them chalk-up the necessary experience.  This was their first outing and we stuck with a local favorite – Poo Poo Point.

Stop Ben! Perhaps I should have said “There’s a Bear!” June 23, 2012

No Gravatar

OK, the bear is very difficult to see but you can just about make it out.  Ben nearly runs it down on the trail but brakes about 30ft short.  You will probably need to watch this several times to see the black smudge move up the left-hand-side of the bank in front of Ben.  The bear then sat next to a tree and casually watched us for 3-4 minutes (while I was taking the pictures posted in the previous blog entry).  We caught this on video because Jack was wearing a GoPro.

Couple of miles hike up and then a long sledding-run down for the boys.  Cassie eating snow, great views but chilly when not moving…

Ben has been watching a lot of Man v’s Wild with Bear Grylls.  Yesterday he built a snow hut and spent several hours inside it with –5 deg C temperatures (and then came in for hot cider).  Just hope he’s not going to start eating like Bear.

A lovely day out in the snow followed by an evening where the boys cooked using the Dutch oven.  They cooked ‘Nundawaga Stake Cobler’ from The Scout’s Large Groups Cookbook.  It was absolutely divine.

Kendall Peak with Ben December 22, 2011

Not to be outdone by his brother, Ben and I trekked 5.35 miles up to find a geocache pinned to the side of a tree.  The snow was fairly compacted so we just used the Snow Trax.

First archery lesson for Ben and Jack May 30, 2010

No Gravatar

Took the boys to their first archery lesson up in Montlake where they have an indoor 20 yard range at The Nock Point.  Jack started out shooting left handed but the following week seems to have flipped to prefer to shoot with his right hand.
